A Very Public Lesson in Humility

Humility and kids don’t exactly go together like peanut butter and jelly. That goes double when teens are involved. Perhaps, that’s why the video of a Texas high school student making a very public apology to a plane full of passengers has gone viral overnight. In case you’ve been living under a rock or you’re too busy dealing with your own self-absorbed offspring, you can check out the video clip here. Thanks to a couple of ingenious high school lacrosse coaches, “Lone Star State” teen Mac Breedlove was taught a very public lesson in humility and shown why it’s never … Continue reading

Good News is Green News

I don’t know about you, but I am fed up with the news lately. A zombie apocalypse, child molesters, hate crimes – I just cannot take anymore! Every day when I check the news (yes, I am a glutton for punishment!), it seems most of the headlines are bad. But, every once in a while, I find some good news. To me, at least in the case of these items, good news is green news. It is stories about people helping out people without wanting any fame or glory for it. Today, I read that an anonymous casino owner just … Continue reading

Saving on Tropical Escapes

Well, I’m sure reservations to Hawaii will increase exponentially after last night’s Pro Bowl telecast. The football contest is more of an extended commercial for the islands than an actual competition between AFC and NFC players. Not that I am complaining. After all, I didn’t tune in to watch grown men throw around the pigskin. I just wanted to see shots of the sun-kissed shores of my motherland. Last night I got caught up in the moment and blogged about taking a trip to Hawaii and other tropical destinations. However, I neglected to address the cost involved when you jet-off … Continue reading

Check Store Policy Before You Shop

One of the good things about shopping is that depending upon what you want to buy, you have at least a couple of options of where to buy it from. This is especially true if you consider the wide variety of things that are available online. Many factors like price and convenience will probably influence your decision of where to buy something. There is another important factor that you may want to consider when you are making a choice about where to shop – company policy. Policies for returns, price adjustments, and just about any other customer service issue that … Continue reading

Japanese Debris Headed this Way

If you thought that the fallout from the Japanese earthquake and tsunami that took place on March 11, 2011 was all over, you are wrong. For a while, there was concern about radiation reaching the states. While it did, officials assured us that it was not at levels that would cause concern. We are yet to know the results of the devastating earthquake, but one thing is for sure – it caused a lot of debris and some of that debris is headed straight for our coastline. The bad news is the debris weighs about 100,000 tons. Image a wall … Continue reading

Things to Know About Wedding Insurance

Are you planning a big wedding? There are a lot of people who spend more than a year figuring out every little detail about exactly how they want their wedding to be. Making this happen can cost thousands of dollars. Wedding insurance can give you some protection in case something goes wrong. Later on this week, I will be flying halfway across the country to attend my sister’s wedding. This will be my first experience being a bridesmaid. So far, I am amazed by how many little tiny details bridesmaids have to deal with. I purchased the dress, and found … Continue reading

Ways to Save: Savvy Shopping

I’ve seen TLC’s megahit, “Extreme Couponing” on many occasions, and each time I view it I’m left asking this question: Where are these people shopping that they can double or triple their coupons? Clearly, not in Wisconsin. I don’t know of any grocery store in the state that doubles coupons. And if I am wrong, I would love for you to let me know. I could actually save money if I’m incorrect. What a concept. I am an avid coupon-er, though I don’t dumpster dive nor do I steal newspapers from other people’s homes. Rather, I simply use what I … Continue reading

Luggage Graveyard

Scottsboro, Alabama. Ever been? If you are looking for lost luggage you may want to book a trip, pronto. In a previous post I shared my lost bag story of woe. At the time I was wearing my aunt’s clothes while the carrier tried to find my electric blue suitcase, I never dreamed that my bag could end up in a 40,000-square-foot structure along a dusty country road in Alabama. But alas, Scottsboro is where many lost bags come to die… or find new owners courtesy of rock-bottom prices. The southern city is home to the Unclaimed Baggage Center, a … Continue reading

Spring Break Travel Prep

Now that we’re under a Winter Storm Warning, I’m seriously rethinking our decision not to fly to Hawaii for Easter break. The reality of having to dig out from under 10 inches of snow in late April does that to a person. Still, after hearing about slumbering air traffic controllers, sky-high airfares and TSA employee-run robbery rings, I suppose we’re better off staying home this spring break. If you are planning to jet off to grandma’s house, the beach or Disney this week you might be wondering how you can spare yourself from experiencing a travel nightmare. Here are some … Continue reading

Seasonal Airline Seat Sale

When trying to score a cheap seat on a commercial airliner, timing is everything. If you are looking to travel to your favorite vacation destination, now is the time to fly. January and February typically see the fewest number of flyers. So as an incentive to frugal travelers, a number of airlines are offering fabulous fare sales to fill empty seats. AirTran and Southwest were among the first of the major carriers to launch widespread sales. The discount airlines have slashed fares for flights through mid-February. Savings are as much as 50 percent lower than holiday and summer ticket prices. … Continue reading
