Advice for the Pregnant Traveler

This is a follow up to my blog on “babymoons” (vacations that expectant parents take prior to the birth of their child). I felt, as though I should address concerns regarding traveling while you are pregnant. I remember asking my doctor whether I could travel to San Antonio in my eighth month of pregnancy. He asked if I felt comfortable delivering my baby there. I said, “no.” He replied, “I guess you have your answer.” It was said very nicely as he is a wonderful doctor, but his response lends itself to the most important point in this blog: Regardless … Continue reading

Traveling During Pregnancy Part V

3:30 We are on the last leg of our long drive. At this point we both need a snack. I have a bag with dry snacks and some apples. I pass some crackers back to my son and he says, “Thank you Mommy!” I have some peanuts and an apple as a snack which makes me think of caramel apples! Yum! 4PM If we are on track and on time, we should arrive at our destination in one hour, but I have a feeling that it is going to take us a bit longer than that based on my math … Continue reading

Traveling During Pregnancy Part III

8AM We have only been driving for an hour and II was hoping that I could make at least two hours before needing to stop to use the restroom. After finishing my latte and with a baby bouncing on my bladder, it seems that stopping sooner than I anticipated is going to be a necessity. I just need to find the perfect place to stop. Since we do not need gas yet, I am thinking that a rest stop would provide the perfect stopping grounds with easy access to the interstate. 8:30 So far there has been no rest stops … Continue reading

Traveling During Pregnancy Part I

I have spent the last two days preparing for a long drive to visit my sister, her husband, and their precious four week old baby girl. This will be my first long drive with just the kids, granted one is in utero. I suspect that pregnancy will have an affect on the road trip because I have never traveled more then two hours away while I was this pregnant. None the less this is a visit that I have been looking forward to for the last ten weeks at least (ever since my sister’s visit for her baby shower). Still … Continue reading

Baby Born at 37,000 Feet

People living in Northern Canada could have never known what was going on in the skies above their homes last week while they were eating dinner. A female passenger on a Korean Air Lines flight was giving birth to a baby. According to reports, Jadan Brown was delivered last Wednesday by his father Larry, an emergency medical worker, and a Korean surgeon who happened to be onboard the flight from the Philippines to New York City. Isn’t it amazing that whenever a major medical emergency occurs on a flight (major enough to make headlines, anyway) that a doctor, nurse or … Continue reading

Travel and Your Health: Long Flights And Blood Clots

I had never heard of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE) until the death of NBC news correspondent David Bloom. The newsman died of the condition while he was covering the war in Iraq four years ago. Now the World Health Organization has issued a warning to all travelers regarding long flights and DVT. The U.N. agency is recommending that passengers on flights that exceed four hours exercise their legs and avoid taking sleeping pills to reduce the risk of potentially fatal blood clots. Doctors say deep vein thrombosis, which occurs when a blood clot in the extremities … Continue reading
