A Chocoholic's Dream Destination

You know you're in a special place when your tour guide warns you not to lick the walls...

That warning may be hard to heed when visiting the new Godiva Chocolate room located inside of Manhattan's Bryant Park Hotel. The pre-Valentine's Day creation will not be available for guests until May, but some lucky visitors got a sneak peek of the sweet suite last week.

If you are watching your waistline don't bother to tempt yourself with a stay--this room is made for serious chocoholics who have no qualms about indulging in the tasty treat. How can you resist when almost the entire room and its furnishings, even the artwork, are made from dark, rich chocolate?

From the chandelier, which is decorated with chocolate stars, truffles and crescents (under glass) to the fireplace (with its chocolate logs and mantle) and the candles (all chocolate) the room is a chocoholic's dream destination.

The chocolate suite also features a sofa framed by chocolate walls and books that open up to reveal mounds of chocolates. And hanging on the chocolate walls in the "living room" is a painting created entirely of multicolored chocolate pieces inspired by Gustav Klimt's painting "The Kiss." Not to be outdone, above the dining table is a "canvas" dripping with brown and white chocolate - a takeoff on Jackson Pollock's signature "drip" paintings.

So how can you view the decadent décor in person? Buy a lot of Godiva chocolate. The entire room is up for grabs in a Valentine's Day contest sponsored by the Belgian chocolatier. The who buys the winning box of chocolates (the ones that sell for $23 and up) will win a stay in the chocolate room. The winning box, which is ciculating somewhere in North America, will contain a note informing the buyer of his or her good luck.

If you don't like those odds you might consider banking on a sure thing for your sweetheart this Valentine's Day.

San Francisco's 153-room art deco Maxwell Hotel in Union Square is offering a one-night romance package that goes beyond the classic chocolates and flowers. Guests who stay during the month of February get a "Do Not Disturb: We're Busy" door hanger, a $50 gift certificate to Victoria's Secret, and an in-room movie rental. Rates start at $169 per room per night.
